Artificial Intelligence and Other True Stories about our Technological Future

Our May luncheon with Dag Kittlaus, one of the co-founders of Siri, was a thought-provoking and exciting event entitled “Artificial Intelligence and Other True Stories about our Technological Future”.  Dag told the story of Siri’s birth and childhood and explored the incredible technology breakthroughs that will shape our future sooner rather than later including AI, Nanotechnology and Biotechnology followed by a Q& A session.  Dag was the CEO and Co-founder of Siri before selling it to Apple in 2010 where he ran Siri and speech recognition working closely with Steve Jobs until the initial launch in 2011.  Dag is currently the CEO and Co-founder of Viv Labs which was acquired by Samsung in 2016 to create and scale the next generation of AI Assistants.

Signature Luncheon with Governor Hickenlooper

On April 11, Governor Hickenlooper addressed the members of The Economic Club of Colorado.  Governor Hickenlooper will shared his thoughts on the challenges facing Colorado and how he thinks they should be addressed.  Governor Hickenlooper discussed how he believes the new administration and new national policies may or may not affect Colorado.  The Governor’s luncheon is always a favorite of our members and this year was no different as we have received fabulous feedback on this event.

Backstage Event at the Halcyon Hotel
The Halcyon Hotel, Denver CO

On March 8, ECC will host a Backstage Event at the new Halcyon hotel in Cherry Creek North.  Matt Joblon, one of the developers of the Halcyon, will join us for a talk about the development of the hotel as well as the rapid growth in Cherry Creek North.  Come get to know other members of the Club in an intimate setting while learning about growth in this neighborhood of our city.

Signature Luncheon with Medal of Honor Recipient, Clint Romesha
Denver Country Club, Denver CO

Medal of Honor Recipient, Clint Romesha, will address The Economic Club of Colorado on February 16, 2017.  Romesha received the nation’s highest military honor for “courageous leadership” during a 2009 firefight in Afghanistan.  Staff Sergeant Romesha is also the author of a memoir entitled Red Platoon.  Staff Sergeant Romesha is an inspiring speaker and will share his stories from battle as well as his thoughts on leadership.

Colorado Perspective: PERA 101

Mr. Gregory Smith, PERA’s Director/CEO gave ECC members an overview of Colorado PERA, the state’s largest public pension fund .  In addition to providing retirement security to over 500,000 Colorado public employees, Colorado PERA contributes to Colorado’s economy with retirement distributions resulting in $5.2 billion in total economic output. Serving PERA for more than 14 years, Mr. Smith is the sixth Executive Director of the retirement system, which has over $44 billion in defined benefit assets. Under Mr. Smith’s leadership and direction, Colorado PERA remains involved in many innovative ventures in the pension arena that keep Colorado PERA in the national forefront.  Mr. Smith gave a high-level overview of PERA, its governance structure and operational model. In addition, Mr. Smith reviewed several independent studies commissioned by the General Assembly to evaluate the cost effectiveness of PERA, as well as discussed the sustainability of the fund.

Mr. Valliere has nearly 40 years of experience following Washington issues for institutional and retail investors. His work focuses on the vital intersection of politics and economics, including the role of Congress and the White House in fashioning fiscal policy, and interest rate policy as determined by the U.S. Federal Reserve.  Mr. Valliere is widely quoted in the nation’s media and is a regular guest on CNBC, Bloomberg TV and radio, Fox Business, CNN, and CBS radio. He is also regularly quoted in the nation’s financial press, including Barron’s and the Wall Street Journal. He earned a BA from George Washington University.

DenverBeerCoMembers met at Denver Beer Co. to mingle and get to know each other better while enjoying some of the best brews in town.  We heard from Charlie Berger, one of the founders of Denver Beer Co, on the beer industry, the process of brewing their craft beers and Denver’s niche in the craft beer industry.  Members were able to connect with each other in a more intimate setting while getting a behind-the-scenes look at how the craft beer industry operates.

Governor Hickenlooper joined the Economic Club for one of our Signature Luncheons.  The Governor discussed the economy, legislation and challenges he believes Colorado is facing as well as how those challenges might be overcome.  Governor Hickenlooper then took questions from the members.  The luncheon was well-attended and numerous attendees remarked on how engaging and candid the Governor was in his remarks and answers.

The CEO of Women’s Bean Project, Tamra Ryan, took us on a tour of the Women’s Bean Project.  Ms. Ryan explained the organization’s mission of helping unemployed and impoverished women learn job skills and how, through this mission, Women’s Bean Project also helps the community, the economy and runs a thriving business.  We also heard from one of the women in the program who shared the skills she has learned through the program and the way that it has enriched her life.  This event highlighted a truly amazing organization founded in Colorado that manages to do good in the world while doing well in business.

Galvanize - Work SpaceEconomic Club hosted an event at Galvanize’s Platte street location.   We heard from one of the founders of Galvanize, Chris Onan, who took us on a tour of Galvanize and then interviewed a panel of entrepreneurs who founded their companies, using Galvanize as a launching pad, and have since sold their companies.  The panelists were Jenna Walker (Artifact Uprising), Kevin McInerney (Active Junky) and Steve Swoboda (SpotXchange).

Thorn, Founder and CEO, Mile High Development, LLC, gave us insights into the evolution of the Denver Art Museum Expansion Co-Development Project, a model Public Private Development which produced the Cultural Center Garage, Museum Residences and the ART Hotel.  The event was held at the Martin Museum Residence, designed by Daniel Libeskind, which houses the Martin’s private collection of Post World War II Contemporary Art.  It included the work of Clyfford Still, Frank Stella, Andy Warhol, John Chamberlain, Alexander Calder, Agnes Martin, Roy Lichtenstein, James Turrell and others.
